CURL MESABI |
Dear Curlers, Golfers, Friends, & Fans
The Chris Plys team had a very successful season last year. They won the U.S. Junior National Championships in Portage, WI for the second consecutive year. They then went on to represent the U.S.A. at the World Junior Curling Championships in Ostersund, Sweden. Coming off of a 5th place finish in 2007, they were going to Sweden looking to get on the medal stand. They did just that! After the round robin play, the boys finished at 7-2 and in a 3-way tie for 1st. After the head to head was figured out, they were seeded 3rd in the page playoffs. They defeated Norway in the 3 v. 4 page game by a score of 8-4. They then went on to face Canada in the Semi-Final game. They defeated Canada and earned a spot in the World Championships against Sweden. In the Championship game, they started off great and held the lead the entire game to win 7-5. They brought home the first Jr. World Championship for the USA in 24 years! It was a very historic and memorable season for these boys. They represented both the United States and the area very well. This was solidified when lead Matt Hamilton won the Sportsmanship award at the World Championship. With your help last year the boys were able to travel around the world and represent the U.S.A. in different competitions. They went to Inverness, Scotland and Ottawa, Canada. They did very well representing the US in these events by placing 5th and 3rd, respectfully. The most important thing they gained out of these events was the preparation that they needed to win another National Championship and eventually the World Championship. Without all of the support from the golf tournament last year, these boys would not have been able to be as well prepared as they were for the National and World Championships. They are very thankful for everything that everyone did to support them last year! Another season is just around the corner, and the team will be trying to defend their National Championship and World Championship. Due to the success of the team last year, the boys (Chris, Aanders, Matt and Matt) have been invited to some competitive events around the world. Unfortunately, the U.S. Curling Association (USCA) does not provide funding for junior teams. Therefore, the team is expected to raise enough money to prepare for the play down process themselves. The team has been invited to the Oslo Cup in Oslo, Norway. This event is for 20 of the top men’s teams in Europe, Canada, and the U.S.A., and the team was offered one of the coveted wild card spots into the event. Also, the team will be going back to the OVCA Junior Superspiel in Ottawa, Canada. This is a highly competitive junior tournament that allows four countries from outside of Canada to be represented. The team will also be playing in a number of men’s tournaments in Canada and the United States. These events will help the team to prepare for State, Nationals, and hopefully Worlds. As you probably know, traveling to play in these events around the world is not cheap. Plane tickets and hotel rooms will cost thousands of dollars alone. Do to the fact that they cannot get any funding from the U.S. Curling Association, we are asking for your support to help the team out. The team will be hosting a golf outing at the Eveleth Golf Course on August 2nd, 2008. There are many ways that you can be a part of the event, which would greatly benefit the team. The attached sheet shows the different ways that you can be involved, which include: event donor, hole sponsor, team sponsor, event sponsor, individual golfer, etc… The event will be a four or five person 18-hole scramble. Registration will begin at 11:30 with a shotgun start at 12:30 P.M. The cost is $50 per golfer, which includes the entry fee, green fees, and dinner at the Curl Mesabi Curling Club following the golf. If you cannot participate the day of the event, there are many other ways that you can support the team. The team is very thankful for your support last year. It really paid off for them! We are hoping that you will become a part of our team again this year. Looking forward to seeing you at the golf course!
Thanks again,
