NEW CURLING EVENT WORLD MIXED DOUBLES
Why another world event? The Olympic governing body would like to make full use of the curling venue at Olympic events. The men’s and women’s events do not run the entire length of the Olympics; this would continue use of the facility for longer than one week. Think of it like short-track skating.
What is Mixed Doubles? The game consists of two players (one male/ one female) that play eight ends. Each team delivers five stones per end. On the team of two, the player delivering the first stone in the end must also deliver the last stone of that end, while the other player delivers stone two, three, and four. The team player delivering the first stone can change from end to end. No stone, including those in the house, can be removed from play prior to the delivery of the fourth stone in the end.
Each end begins with the placement of one team’s stone bisecting the centerline, mid-way between the hogline and the front of the house and one stone of the other team’s on the back half of the button, bisecting the centerline and touching the tee line. The choice of placement is up to the team winning the toss in the first end, then in the following ends, the team that lost the previous end has the choice of placement. If an end is blank, the team that did not deliver the last stone in the blank end, shall have the decision on placement for the next end. The team, whose stationary stone is placed in the position in front of the house, shall deliver first in that end, and the team whose stationary stone is placed in the house, shall deliver the second stone of that end.
This is a brief overview, more details to be found on www.usacurl.org website. The US play down for the 2008 World Mixed Doubles will take place on December 6 – 9, 2007, at the Bemidji Curling Club. The start date may be adjusted depending upon how many teams sign up. The format for the play down will be announced later this summer. The winning two-person team from this play down will represent the US at the 2008 World Mixed Double competition on March 9 -15, 2008 at Vierumaki, Finland.
The formation of a mixed doubles league at Curl Mesabi would be structured around all parties interested. (Whether it be an evening, weekend, or schedule game on your own) Contact President, Gordy Dahl, if you have an interest in a mixed double league, either an individual or couple. Also look for mixed doubles bonspiel of this format at the Duluth Curling Club in December 2007.
