OCTOBER, A VERY BUSY MONTH - WE NEED HELP WITH 6 MAIN ITEMS

Fri. Oct 10th The RRCC will host a Steelworker rally. Ellen has not been given a firm number but the low end seems to be 300, the upper maybe as high as 1,000. The rally will have catered food and bars set up in the arena. We are covered for bartenders but need 15 - 20 people to carry beer and ice to the portable bars, keep the trash cans empty and just be available to help. Call Ellen at 744-1302 or at home, 753-6113, if you can help. The rally starts at 5:00 pm.

Mon. Oct.l3th We will hold our monthly Curl Mesabi Board meeting at 4:00pm. The annual Pre-Season Cleaning Party will start at 6:00 pm. The RRCC is in much better shape this fall but there are a few minor things to touch up. Ellen will have a to do list. Either call her ahead of time or just show up.

Sat. Oct. 18th The Hockey Hall Of Fame Enshrinement party will use the entire building. 1,000 tickets have sold!!! We could have as many as 1,200 attendees. Four portable bars will be set up in the arena and the Free Guard Zone will also be open. The bartender needs have been covered but like the 10th, we need runners to replenish beer and ice, trash duty, etc. Ellen has been working with the Hall Of Fame on the details for this party. We need lots of extra bodies, 25 or more. It starts at 4:00 and will probably go until 1:00 am. Once again, call Ellen if you can help out the Club. Any time you can offer will be appreciated. Work a half shift, 4pm to 9pm or 8pm to lam, or the whole thing.

Ellen and the Board feel it is very important that we demonstrate our ability to handle functions of this size. Hosting events like the Hall Of Fame, and the Embarrass All Class reunion next summer will go a long way towards keeping Curl Mesabi financially sound and dues fixed at current rates.

Sun. Oct 19th This is the target for turning on the ice plant. However, with the Hall Of Fame party the nite of the 18th, we will be delayed by the clean-up on Sunday. T-Ball has asked for help Sunday at 8:00 am to prepare the arena for ice. The United Way is set for Friday Oct 31st. Call Jim at 744-2448.

Painting the ice is always a key to getting the ice ready. The painting is easy, you do not have to be an experienced painter like Demo. The lines are really wide and easy to stay within. Brushes and rollers are furnished, just show up with your painting clothes. Call Jim for the painting date.

Fri. Oct 24th This is the most important date to remember. Scott Weappa was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He has gone through chemotherapy in Duluth and is currently waiting for the next stage of his treatment. Curl Mesabi will be hosting a benefit for Scott and Cheryl on the 24th. There will be ads appearing in the MDN providing information but the key points are:

Keep Scott in your prayers Donations can be sent to:

The benefit will be from 3 pm until midnite The Scott Weappa Benefit Fund

Spaghetti feed 4:30 to 7:00 % Queen City Federal

A monetary donation will be requested for the food P 0 Box 1147

Entertainment and a silent auction during the evening Virginia, MN 55792

Julie and Mike Maroste are chairing the event and can be reached at 744-2365. Contact them if you, or someone you know, has an item to donate for the auction. Also contact Ellen for info or to help.

Tues. Oct 28 Curl Mesabi’s Annual Fall Meeting at 6:30 pm. If the ice is ready, you will not be able to practice until the meeting is adjourned.

GENERAL CURLING NOTES

The arena was relamped the week of Sept 29th. The RRCC is paying for this capital item.

Cameras and TV’s for the remaining 4 sheets will be installed for this season. A nipper has been ordered for ice maintenance. Plans are progressing for a storage building by next spring or summer.

Our membership committee will sponsor at least one open house during the week of the 3rd. This is a perfect time to introduce a friend to curling. League play will begin the week of Nov 10th. It may be deer season, but the ice will be in and we will start using it.

One of the most effective ways of getting people into curling is to ask someone you know to curl with you. Another way is to accept a new curler onto your team even if you don’t know them. Our membership committee is trying to generate new curlers at their open house and in other ways. Skips, please contact your league coordinators and let them know if you are able to take on a new curler or two. If you have a team of four regulars, think about expanding to five.

New Years Eve at Curl Mesabi, a Black Tie affair for the 1st 100 PAID couples © $50 per pair. Nightshades, free bubbly & favors, hors d’oeuvres, and more. Reserve early and only with Ellen.

MONEY MATTERS FROM OUR TREASURER, CHRIS MIKULICH

Aside from the kitchen and bar, we as a curling club, held our own this past season. We added to the Capital Expense Account thanks to those who paid their pledge or sponsor monies. This account, designed for start up costs, now covers major improvements or necessary items. With a nest egg built up and revenue from the bar/restaurant, the Board voted to discontinue the pledge requirement. This will also serve to simplify the dues collection process.

The operation costs for the first few months of the curling season are the greatest and cash flow gets tight. The Board’s policy this year is that dues are to be paid within the first two weeks of league play. Leagues start the week of Nov. 10th, dues are to be paid by Nov 21st. Contact me if you need to make other arrangements. Skips are responsible to make sure their team members have paid their dues. If dues are not paid after two weeks, the member or team will be asked to leave the ice, which could result in a game forfeit.

On the first night of league, you will have to register and sign a liability waiver before you are allowed on the ice. This will only take a few minutes, so please arrive early, be patient, bring your checkbook or cash. It may well be priceless, but Visa is not yet accepted here.

Early payment may be mailed to Curl Mesabi, P0 Box 500, Virginia 55792

Dues structure: One League $150 Lockers: $35 Large

Unlimited $190 $25 Medium

Thank you, Chris
