CURRENT WEATHER AT CURL MESABI

OCTOBER 2001 NEWSLETTER

We will begin ice installation on or about Oct. 14 – the ice has to be completed by Oct. 26th for the UNITED WAY SPIEL.  Please call Jim Wainio or Chuck Rozinka and schedule some time where you can help. The time frame is the shortest we have ever attempted and a lot of help is needed!

Remember to attend the general membership meeting on Oct. 25th at 7:00 p.m.  We have finalized our budget for the year and are proposing dues levels increase of $10: one-league curlers will pay $150 and multiple-league curlers will pay $190.  If you have not yet completed the $250 membership fee, you will also have to pay the $50 minimum payment to work on getting that paid off.  Locker rates have also risen from $20 to $25 for the large lockers and from $10 to $15 for the small individual style.

The Open House will be held on Oct. 30 – Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. each night.  Talk someone that you know into curling (or if they curled in the past, to come back).  Our membership has dropped from 416 in 1999-2000 to 386 last year.  We need to constantly try to replenish/add to our membership.

New curlers dues will again be one-half of regular dues for the first year; they are also given a one-year grace period before they have to start paying on the $250 membership fee.  Students that are minors and curl in a league will again have these dues paid by Junior Curling.

Fifteen new (and slightly larger) lockers were installed in the men’s locker room this past summer.  Rates for these lockers will be $30 – rental of these lockers must be arranged with and paid to the RR@CC management.

 UPDATES – BONSPIELS

Ardy Nurmi-Willberg will coordinate the December 14-16 Junior Spiel

John Kuitunen has graciously offered to coordinate the Bergan Spiel again.  We need some new “blood”.  How about someone giving John a call to help him out this year, and then take it over for next?

The Elk’s Mixed (coordinated by Brandon Mattson) date has been changed from Feb. 22-24 to Nov. 30 – Dec.2.

 OTHER NEWS

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jim Wainio has been hired by the Joint Powers Board to act as  (call it for now) an assistant facility manager and liaison to the curling club.  We believe his hiring will go a long way towards solving many of the problems we had last year – please join us in extending him our congratulations and best wishes.

The USCA contacted me on Dec. 3 about who will be chairing our pin program at the club this year.  The Board is overloaded with work on the Nationals.  We are hoping that someone will volunteer to take on this task.  Please contact Dennis Jorgensen immediately if you are interested.

Installation of the PA System is almost complete – a big thank you to Scott Weappa and Gordy Dahl in addition to their “helpers”.  Since I don’t know all of their names, I will wait to thank them all in a future newsletter or at the general membership meeting.

The Nationals Committee should have a good idea on help that we need now at the membership meeting; perhaps sub-chairs for committees etc.

 INCREASING REVENUE – DECREASING COSTS

NEW CURLERS/GETTING FORMER CURLERS TO COME BACK ARE ESSENTIAL.  I’m betting that almost everyone knows somebody that they could talk to.

ARENA LIGHTING – RR@CC management is convinced that once a bank of arena lights is turned on for the day, they should remain on.  If you come in to practice during the week, please only turn on the bank of lights that are needed and leave them on when you’re finished.  People who might come in to practice after you can then use one of the two sheets that are lit.  An exception to this would be on a day where no activity is planned for the day after your done.

ARENA ADVERTISING – our new lease agreement with the RR@CC turns over all revenue from arena advertising to the curling club.  We formerly shared this revenue with the facility.

The Board is hopeful that someone will volunteer to chair a new position for the Curling Club;  ADVERTISING MANAGER – someone who would be responsible for billing, recruiting new advertisers as well as interacting with our current ones.  We need to show them our appreciation for their business with us.

Please call Dennis Jorgensen immediately if you’re interested in this extremely important position.  We would like to announce the person at the membership meeting so that anyone who might have a prospect could turn over the information.

Until we get someone on board, advertising rates are listed below.  If you  (or someone you know) would like to advertise with us, contact Dennis Jorgensen.

                                                        NEW BANNERS                                          RENEWALS

 4X4 (INCLUDES BANNER AND ARTWORK)       $400                                         $365

4X8                                                                        $750                                         $700

AS YOU CAN SEE, 10 TO 20 NEW ADVERTISERS WOULD PROVIDE A LOT OF INCOME!
