MARCH 2004 NEWSLETTER CURL MESABI BOARD ELECTION The three year terms of Ardy Nurmi-Wilberg, Gordy Dahl and Gary Majeski end this spring. I would like to thank them for the past three years of dedication and effort while on the Board. Any Curl Mesabi member may run for the Board of Directors. You can put your name on the ballot by signing up on one of the lists that have been posted around the club or be nominated from the floor at our Annual Spring Meeting. There are nine members on the Board, each serving a three year term. Three of the positions are elected each spring. SPRING MEETING APRIL 1, 2004 Our Annual Spring Meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Thursday April 1, 2004. There will be a Social Hour starting at 5:30; the Meeting with the election of Board Members at 6:00 and the Finals of the Club Championship at 6:30. This year we will be serving appetizers during the evening rather than having a catered meal. We still need you to sign up for the appetizers by Monday, March 29th so Ellen can plan accordingly. The cost will be approximately $5.00 per person. SMOKE FREE REQUEST MADE TO THE RROC BOARD The RROC Board, a joint powers board that oversees the Range Recreation and Civic Center, is made up of one representative from each of the Quad Cities and Curl Mesabi’s Board, a total of five members. At their February meeting they discussed a request to make the RROC a completely smoke free building. The original design of the RROC called for the smoking and non-smoking areas to be as they are today. Currently smoking is allowed only on the second floor in the carpeted area adjacent to the bar and kitchen. The dance floor is designated non-smoking as well as the arena, lobby and balance of the main floor. Air exchangers were installed only over the smoking area when the building was constructed. Since we are the building’s managing agent, the RROC Board requested that Curl Mesabi bring a recommendation on this issue back to their meeting on April 15th. Our Board did not feel comfortable making that recommendation on our own, we wanted all of our club members to have a direct say on the issue. To that end, we passed a resolution that will give every one a chance to vote on the issue if they choose to do so. The procedure for the vote will be: The vote will occur starting on Tuesday, March 9th and end on Monday March 22nd Voting will take place during league days in the downstairs lobby A Board member will be present with ballots and a club membership list Ballots will be available before, during and after league play. Upon requesting a ballot, the member’s name will be crossed off the list After voting, the ballot will be placed in a box Absentee ballots may be requested from any Board Member Absentee ballots must be returned on or before Monday March 22nd They should be mailed to: Curl Mesabi P0 Box 500 Virginia MN 55792 The ballots will be counted at 10:00 pm, Monday March 22nd ICE PLANT WILL BE TURNED OFF A DAY OR TWO AFTER APRIL 1ST Check with Jim Wainio, T-Ice, T-Ball or their assistants, Mark, Chris or Pat, as to when help will be needed removing the water, cleaning up the arena and putting away the curling paraphernalia. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU, ESPECIALLY THE VOLUNTEERS The Board of Directors wants to thank all of you for another successful year. The quantity of volunteer help was down somewhat from last year, especially behind the bar during leagues and during some of our Bonspiels. Although the quantity was down, the quality was at least as good as last year. One of the issues facing the Board for next year is providing adequate volunteer help for the whole season. This year we had 62 men I open teams, 14 women’s, 22 mixed teams and the Senior league. Our season ran from the middle of November through March, approximately 20 weeks. With curling on 4 days each week, some less due to the Holidays, we needed to cover about 80 days behind the bar. There were far too many leagues that did not have that bar coverage. Assuming the seniors could cover their league with a little help from Ellen or other club members, we had 98 teams available to cover the 80 days of afternoon and evening curling. All we needed is for each team to cover one day or part of two days. That obviously didn’t happen. We know some members are uncomfortable behind the bar and we will continue to work around that. The fact is we need to do something different next year. As for our Bonspiels, Curl Mesabi members participating in them could provide a lot of help for the volunteers simply by taking a few minutes to bus their own table, take out garbage, clean the ice, etc. An EXTRA THANK YOU to those of you who did more than your share during the year, whether it was cleaning restrooms I locker rooms, taking out the garbage, bartending, helping with the ice, stocking the bar, or working during bonspiels. I only wish there were more of you. |
