JANUARY 2002 NEWSLETTER WELL FOLKS, WE FINALLY GOT UP AND RUNNING AROUND THANKSGIVING. We survived a later than usual ice installation (to save costs) and then had to cope with vandalism to our plant during the USWCA Senior Ladies National Event! Thanks to a monumental effort by the icemakers, and numerous volunteers, we only missed about a week and a half of curling. Additionally, what the Board thought might cost us $2000 (to refurbish the ice) turned into an estimated <$500 when many generous club members contributed money above and beyond their dues to help pay for this unexpected cost. Many thanks to those that contributed, to Lonnie Gulbranson (who ran to the cities for supplies), and to those who helped install the ice - (twice)!! Speaking of the USWCA BONSPIEL, Shirley Coe and Dorothy Bergerson, along with their great committee(s) did a wonderful job of organizing the event. Our guests praised the committee for the fantastic job they did, the great facility that we have and the fun that they all had. GREAT JOB GALS! Thanks to all of the volunteers who also helped out at the event timing and cleaning etc. AND TO TOP OFF THE WEEK — the team of Shirley Coe (last rocks), Jay Bergman, Beth Yapel and Ruth Saranen (skipping) were NATIONAL RUNNER-UP!! Rumor has it that they blew everyone out until they played on more "neutral" ice. What an accomplishment for the gals and our club — congratulations! A letter of thanks was written to the Chisholm Curling Club, who saved the day when we lost our ice before the finals. If you see someone from Chisholm, let them know how much we appreciate them. A junior team won the EARLY BIRD BONSPIEL for the first time that I know of Chris Perkovich, Jason Smith, Jeff Isaacson along with John and Tom Scott captured the title during the weekend of December 7-9. Most (if not all) of the team curls in the Tuesday Night Men’s League here at Curl Mesabi guess you could call their feat COMING OF AGE! 4th ANNUAL CURL MESABI LADIES BONSPIEL will be held January 18-20. Call Jane Rockstad at 741-8365 to enter or for more information. RECOGNITION OF VOLUNTEERS — for the last several years, the Board of Directors has been struggling with the issue of how we could get more people involved with helping out at the club. If everyone just gave a little of his or her time, the few that always do wouldn’t get burnt out. At our Dec. 5 Board Meeting, we reached consensus on what we hope will become the long- term answer creation of a VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD. We are hoping this "positive" approach to getting more help will have several effects: 1: To recognize the volunteer efforts of the members, showing our gratitude The motion (which passed unanimously) reads A: "One man and one woman will be chosen annually as the Curl Mesabi Volunteer of the Year. Nominations may come from the board and the membership. Board Members will not be eligible. B: Members who have volunteered 10 hours in a season will be eligible to have their name placed in a drawing for free membership (one night of curling) for the following year. Board members again are not eligible. The drawing will most likely be done at the year-end banquet. Reporting of these hours will be done on the honor system. For the 2001-2002 season, 5 of the volunteer hours must be for the 2002 Nationals, plus 5 hours for regular season activities. We certainly hope that the many people who give more than 10 hours each year will continue to do so! A ballot box (for the volunteer of the year award) and a sign up sheet (where people who have completed 10 hours of work can add their name) will be available soon. Watch for them. As stated above, the Board has struggled greatly with this issue. I’m hoping that each and every one of you will respond to this positive means of recognition and reward for the help we so desperately need. Paul Cerkvenik is stepping down as the Curl Mesabi representative to the Joint Powers Board after several years of service. We are all indebted to him for the many hours that he has spent representing our viewpoint. Many thanks, Paul for a job well done. Gary Majeski will be assuming this important role beginning in January. Coat racks and bulletin boards are needed in both locker rooms and hallway walls. Gary Majeski will be chairing this effort and is looking for help the club will pay for the materials; we need some of your time. Contact Mojo if you can help, please. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS — while a large volume of work has been accomplished in regard to us hosting the 2002 Nationals, there is still much to do! The Championship Committee is "ratcheting" up its activities — now is the time for you to get involved. There is a "mountain" of small projects and details that need to be taken care of before March 1st. We need help to start peeking away at these items before they become overwhelming! We have identified several areas where we will need a lot of help during the championships. OFFICIALS — please call Shirley Coe at 741-0253 to sign up. ICE CLEANERS, TICKET SALES AND FACILITY UPKEEP are three other areas that we have identified as needing a great deal of help. The committee is developing a "master sign up board" for these activities. It should be ready for our next meeting. Please attend the next National Championship Meeting on Jan. 20th at 6:30 pm. We need all the help we can get at this stage! |
